Michiana Family YMCA plans second location at former Pinnacle Athletic Club building

Michiana Family YMCA is opening a second location right in the middle of Mishawaka.

The new location will be at the former Pinnacle Athletic Club, 205 W. Edison Road, between Grape Road and Main Street.

Dan Asleson, president and CEO of the Michiana Family YMCA, announced the new location during a press conference Tuesday afternoon, April 28, to an audience of media, Y staff and community members.

“We feel like it’s a great time for us to be located right in the heart of the Mishawaka and Granger community,” Asleson said.

The Mishawaka location will focus on youth and family services as well as helping with local health needs such as obesity and diabetes, Asleson said. All youth programs, except for those that require a swimming pool, will be offered.

The 35,000-square foot building will be renovated and about 15 to 20 full time equivalent jobs will be created for the new location. Asleson said the plan is to open the Mishawaka location in the fall.

The Mishawaka location will likely serve about 1,000 families, Asleson said. Michiana Family YMCA members will have access to the South Bend and Mishawaka locations as well as the Niles-Buchanan YMCA in Michigan.

Mishawaka Mayor Dave Wood applauded the second YMCA location, recalling memories of being dropped off at the old Mishawaka Y with his friends to swim and play basketball.

“The Y is making a triumphant return to Mishawaka and we can’t be more grateful for that,” Wood said. “The Y provides absolutely critical services to our city. We’re looking forward to have those services back in Mishawaka.”

The YMCA officially acquired the building on Friday, April 24, Asleson said. Pinnacle Athletic Club signage that appeared on the building was removed by Monday afternoon, April 27.

Pinnacle closed in October and the building went on sale soon after. A sign was placed out front requesting offers to be sent by Jan. 15.

The building is two stories and contains multiple exercise and workout rooms and locker room facilities.
