A well-known barbecue chain restaurant near the University Park Mall closed for good over the weekend after being in business for 14 years.

Famous Dave’s at 6402 N. Grape Road was recently cited for health code violations, but owner Ron Helms told WSBT that the decision to close on Sunday, Aug. 23, had more to do with money than the health department.

“For the past several years, we’ve been struggling to keep things on the up, up, up and up,” Helms said. “We made a business decision a few weeks ago that we would have to close down this operation.”

About 60 part-time employees were informed of the closure on Sunday morning, according to the South Bend Tribune. They will receive two weeks of severance pay.
