LANSING, Mich. (AP) — Michigan concealed gun licenses will no longer be issued by local law enforcement starting next week and responsibilities instead will be transferred to county clerks and the state police.

County gun boards, which issue 115,000 licenses annually, will be eliminated Tuesday under a law designed to streamline licensing and make it more uniform.

County clerks will assume many duties while state police will have investigatory powers to verify an applicant’s eligibility.

The cost of an initial application and license will drop from $105 to $100. The cost of a renewal application and license will rise from $105 to $115.

A legislative analysis says Michigan is the last state to use local gun boards to issue, deny, revoke or suspend concealed pistol licenses. The system dates to the late 1920s.
