KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) — Family members of a young mother who was wounded during Kalamazoo-area shootings that killed six say it could be six months to a year before she’s fully recovered.

The Kalamazoo Gazette reports relatives of Tiana Carruthers and her spiritual adviser gathered Saturday at Haven Reformed Church to speak about her.

Scott McCloughan, who oversees the mentoring ministry at Kalamazoo Youth for Christ, has known Carruthers for six years. He says the 25-year-old wants to express her deep gratitude for the outpouring of love the community has shown her and her family.

Antasia Fareed says her sister is “always the person who lifts the family up.”

Keith and Raiko Carruthers say their niece is loving, maternal, focused and determined.

Carruthers was the first person shot in the Feb. 20 attacks.
