The Indiana State Police have fired a senior trooper who’s facing a second lawsuit accusing him of preaching to citizens while on duty.

The agency announced Thursday it had fired Senior Trooper Brian Hamilton of Connersville for insubordination.

Wendy Pyle of Connersville filed a federal lawsuit Tuesday, claiming Hamilton violated her civil rights when he asked her what church she attended and whether she was saved during a January traffic stop.

State police say Pyle filed a formal complaint on Jan. 14, and an internal investigation began the following day. It concluded with Superintendent Doug Carter firing Hamilton.

The first lawsuit came in 2014, and the 14-year veteran was told in writing not to discuss religion with others while on duty.

A telephone message seeking comment was left at Hamilton’s home.

Pyle is represented by the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana.

The Herald Bulletin reports that Hamilton gave Pyle a speeding ticket and invited her to his church.

Pyle is seeking punitive damages and attorney fees. She also wants a jury trial.

Hamilton, who works out of the Pendleton post, was sued for similar actions during a traffic stop in 2014.
