16-year-old girl killed in Edwardsburg crash, two other teenage girls injured

The person killed in a two-vehicle crash near Edwardsburg, Mich., on Tuesday morning was a 16-year-old Edwardsburg High School student.

Makayla McKenzie was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash at Pine Lake Street and Dailey Road, according to the Cass County Sheriff’s Department.

McKenzie was driving an SUV north on Dailey Road when her vehicle was hit by a pickup truck driven by a 25-year-old Niles, Mich., man who police say disregarded a stop sign.

A 16-year-old girl and a 17-year-old girl were passengers in McKenzie’s vehicle and were hospitalized after the crash. The 16-year-old girl was released from a hospital but the 17-year-old girl is still being treated.

The girls were dual-enrolled in Southwestern Michigan College and were on their way to a college event when the crash happened.

The crash is under investigation.

A GoFundMe site is collecting donations for McKenzie’s funeral and to help her parents.
