Drunk driver in fatal 2015 Elkhart wreck given suspended sentence

A man whose blood alcohol level was three times the legal limit when he crashed his vehicle into a tree and killed a 15-year-old Ukrainian immigrant, will not go to prison.

Timofey Karas was hospitalized for almost a year after losing control of his car in the 28000 block of C.R. 20 just before 5 a.m. on Jan. 18, 2015. The vehicle hit a tree, killing Taisiya Sharun as a result.

In court Thursday, the judge gave Karas an 8 year sentence, but it’ll be entirely suspended and served on probation. Everyone involved in the case, from Sharun’s family to Karas’ attorney, agreed jail time wasn’t warranted, according to our reporting partners at the Elkhart Truth.

That’s because Karas will be in a wheelchair for the rest of his life, completely paralyzed as a reminder of what happened that night, when he got behind the wheel with a blood-alcohol count of 0.27 and killed Sharun as a result.

Karas doesn’t remember the fatal crash, but he knows what happened and that “he lives it every day”, his attorney told the Elkhart Truth.
