GPS tracking helped foil the theft of three trucks full of stolen commercial truck tires early Monday morning.

About $500,000 worth of truck tires in three trucks were taken from South Bend, according to WNDU.

The tires were found in Michigan City. GPS led them to a Speedway truck stop on S.R. 421. The thieves ran into the woods by the time the tire company tracked them down. One of the suspects is in custody thanks to the help of K-9 officers, according to the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office.

Knowing there were three trucks, police continued searching for the two other suspects and even called a helicopter in to help. They called off the search around noon Monday, but it turns out they didn’t have to go far to get the second suspect.

He was found inside the Speedway. He’s been arrested on outstanding warrants, but police believe he’s involved in the theft.

The whereabouts of a third person involved in the theft is still unknown.

Replacing your truck tires is one of the regular expenses to be expected when operating a commercial truck. Irregular wear, however, can force you to replace truck tires early and waste money. You should be aware of the most frequent causes of irregular tread wear and tire failure while driving and maintaining your rig. That way, you can do everything within your power to keep wear to a minimum and safely go for longer without replacing your tires. @ http://www.huntertires.com

Properly maintained commercial truck tires aren’t just a matter of safety and fuel economy (although that should be enough reason for any owner/operator or fleet manager); it’s a matter of federal regulation. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has a number of regulations for commercial tires. If you are found to be falling short of these regulations, you may face citations or even have your truck placed out of service. . @ http://www.huntertires.com
