Reading program at St. Joseph Juvenile Justice Center ending

A reading program for non-violent first-time offenders is going away in St. Joseph County.

Reading for Life will stop operating in the county no later than September 1. The reason is because of data that shows community service is a more effective deterrent for future crime than the reading program, according to the South Bend Tribune.

Reading for Life officials defended the program and challenged the statistics, but were unable to sway JJC leaders like Probate Court Judge Jim Fox, who made it clear that the didn’t want the program in the county anymore. Fox told the Tribune that it’d work better for kids who are missing school, not kids in detention who “aren’t able to understand virtue and upper-level thinking.”

The program will continue to operate in Elkhart County. As for St. Joseph County, the JJC wants permission to reallocate $96,000 that went towards the program to other medium-to-high-risk youth programs.
