South Bend police are staying quiet about a handgun that was found by a local TV reporter lying on the street.

A WNDU reporter found a handgun on S.R. 23 lying in the middle of the road near Cleveland Road on Monday.

South Bend police spokesman Ken Garcia told the South Bend Tribune there was “nothing criminal” with how the gun, a 9mm Smith and Wesson that was loaded and had SBPD engraved on the side, ended up on the road, though they’re not sure how the gun ended up there. An internal investigation has launched as a result.

The serial number on the gun should indicate which officer it belongs to, though a name wasn’t released.
