Niles city officials unveil proposed rules for medical marijuana dispensaries

The rules for operating medical marijuana dispensaries in Niles have been revealed.

However, if the proposed rules pass, it could mean a delay for a planned dispensary at the old Niles post office. That’s because the rules include a provision about not allowing marijuana facilities within 1,000 feet of a school or library.

Community Development Director Sanya Vitale told the South Bend Tribune that, because the Niles District Library lies at Main and Seventh Streets, that “takes out a good swath of downtown,” including the vacant post office building. The new rules revealed Monday night are meant to mirror state law.

The rules will be discussed again at the October 23rd council meeting.
