Two people continue to recover from injuries suffered when their apartment building in Elkhart became engulfed in flames.

Those two have been released days after the Monday morning fire on North 3rd Street near West Jackson Boulevard that took a lot of manpower and water to put out. A few families are now without a place to stay.

Elkhart Fire Chief Chad Carey told ABC 57 he can say for sure the fire started on the first floor, but he can’t say for certain just what caused the fire in the first place. He also confirms one person was taken to a Fort Wayne hospital in severe injuries. That patient’s condition is unknown.

Fire officials are still working to determine the cause.
