Elderly Elkhart woman dies days after Elkhart apartment fire

(Kylie Walker/ABC 57)

A woman has died days after an apartment fire in Elkhart.

The 73-year-old woman had to be flown to a Fort Wayne hospital with second and third-degree burns after Monday morning’s fire on North 3rd Street. WSBT reports she died from her injuries Tuesday night. An autopsy is being performed.

Two other women were treated and released this week from a local hospital. One had smoke inhalation while the other had minor burns.

Investigators are still looking into how the fire began. Investigators do believe the fire, which gutted one building and damaged a next door building, started in the first floor.
