Dowagiac Union Schools closed Wednesday due to threats

All Dowagiac Union Schools will be closed Wednesday, March 28th as police continue to investigate a threat that was found inside the high school on Tuesday, March 27.

The Dowagiac Police Department responded to separate threats at both the high school and the Dowagiac Middle School.

The threat found on Tuesday morning at Dowagiac Union High School was written on a bathroom wall by a student.

The written message indicated the threat was to occur on Wednesday.

Police secured the school and determined that there was no immediate threat to the school. Officers began investigating this incident and maintained a security presence at the school, as well as Dowagiac Middle School, as a precaution.

On Tuesday afternoon, police were advised of a threat located on a bathroom wall at the Dowagiac Middle School. The threat stated that someone was going to “blow up” the school.

Officers were able to pinpoint a Dowagiac Middle School student as a suspect. The suspect’s parent was contacted and the student admitted to making this threat.

The student was turned over to a parent and the incident is being submitted to the Cass County Prosecutor’s Office for review.

Both incidents remain under investigation.
