EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) — The Indiana Republican Party is holding a convention where delegates are set to vote on a party platform that could eliminate language calling for marriage to only be between “a man and a woman.”
The wording change was supported by Gov. Eric Holcomb’s hand-picked party chairman. But social conservatives have fought back fiercely.
They publicly leaked the wording change. Now it is opposed by more than 80 party activists and elected officials, including two congressmen and Indiana House Speaker Brian Bosma.
Chairman Kyle Hupfer said last week that the wording was intended to be inclusive. But he’s backed off in the days since.
Now delegates will be able to vote on two proposed platforms on Saturday.
One includes the “man and a woman” marriage language. The other does not.
