KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) — A southwestern Michigan Superfund site in Allegan and Kalamazoo counties is being put on a list for immediate action.

The Environmental Protection Agency says a focus will be made on entering into agreements with potentially responsible parties to complete cleanup of the 80-mile (129-kilometer) Allied Paper/Portage Creek/Kalamazoo River site.

The EPA says PCB contamination was extensive in soil, sediment, landfills and paper mill properties as well as in the Kalamazoo River, adjacent riverbanks, contiguous floodplains, and a stretch of Portage Creek. Cleanups have been completed in three areas where maintenance and groundwater monitoring are underway.

The EPA says there are 16 Superfund sites on its Administrator’s Emphasis List.
