The first freeze of the fall season will be here before you know it, and this year farmers aren’t the only ones giving it a lot of attention.
Experts say the first hard freeze this year will be critical in killing off mosquitoes that are transferring the EEE virus to humans, especially in Michigan.
The first hard freeze is defined as the first time in the season that the temperature hits 28 degrees or cooler for at least four hours. Some experts say those temperatures should kill most of the mosquitoes, but those that have found shelter somewhere may require colder weather to kill them.
The first frosts and freezes tend to arrive in lower Michigan around mid to late October.
