New information about Sunday crash, shooting in Berrien County

UPDATE: There is new information about the crash in the City of St. Joseph that claimed the life of one person and injured three others.

The collision happened at Wayne and Port Streets early Sunday morning, Dec. 15, and took place after an altercation at Blossom Acres.

Berrien County Sheriff’s investigators now say Jhuone Fonder, 23, of Benton Harbor died, due to injuries from the speed-fueled rollover crash.

He and the driver were thrown from the vehicle.

The sheriff’s department also says a 24-year-old man in the car was shot in the hip and right arm. He, and the others, will be okay.

So far, no word of any arrests stemming from the violence at the housing complex.

ORIGINAL STORY: One person was killed and three others injured after a shooting and rollover crash in Berrien County.

Police were called to the area of Wayne Street and Port Street around 6:30 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 15.

On arrival, police found two people ejected from the vehicle.

Two of the occupants were found with gunshot wounds. One of the victims was pronounced dead, though it is unclear whether that person died due to the gunshot wounds.

The other gunshot victim and two other people from the vehicle were taken to the hospital for treatment.

The initial investigation revealed that the four individuals may have been involved in an altercation at Blossom Acers Housing Complex in Benton Township.

The Berrien County Sheriff’s Department released the following information:

On Sunday December 15, 2019 at 06:32hrs, the Saint Joseph Department of Public Safety responded to a report of a one vehicle roll-over traffic crash on Port St. at Wayne St. in the City of Saint Joseph.

The officers determined that four subjects were in the vehicle at the time of the traffic crash and it appears that two individuals were ejected from the vehicle at the time of the crash.

One individual was pronounced deceased at the scene and the other three individuals were transported to Spectrum Lakeland Medical Center for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

The Saint Joseph Department of Public Safety is being assisted in this investigation by the Berrien County Sheriff Department, Michigan State Police, Benton Harbor Police Department, Benton Township Police Department, Medic I and Western Michigan University, Medical Examiner.

The initial investigation revealed that these four individuals may have been involved in an altercation at Blossom Acers Housing Complex in the Township of Benton.  The St. Joseph Department of Public Safety is currently working with the Benton Township Police Department and following up on leads to determine if any of the injuries sustained by these individuals where the result of the traffic crash or the previous altercation in Benton Township.  The names of the injured and deceased individuals are not being released at this time pending notification of family members. 

The cause of the traffic crash is being conducted by the Saint Joseph Department of Public Safety in conjunction with the Berrien County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Crash Reconstruction Team.
