Mishawaka woman dies after dive at Florida shipwreck

A scuba depth gauge marks a depth of 52 feet as freediver Roberto Reyes ascends off Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, Sunday, Dec. 1, 2013. Freediving is the fastest growing segment of the diving industry, according to Grant Graves, former president of the U.S. Apnea Association, which oversees the sport. It can take many forms, with some participants wearing weights to help them navigate under water. He said people are drawn to it in part because not much equipment is required and classes have become more available in regions such as the Caribbean. (AP Photo/Ricardo Arduengo)

A Mishawaka woman has died after scuba diving off Key West in Florida.

The South Bend Tribune reports 59 year-old Rebecca Butler Power experienced distress while performing a dive at a shipwreck at around 100 feet. It happened Thursday morning around 10:30 at the USS General Hoyt S. Vandenberg, a popular shipwreck diving attraction about six miles off the coast of Key West.

She was pronounced dead a short time later at a Florida hospital. Her death is the second related to the shipwreck since August.
