Michigan’s online unemployment system struggles under pressure

(Tommie Lee/MNC)

Those seeking to file for unemployment online in Michigan on Tuesday found themselves unable to do so.

The Michigan Department of Labor and Economic Opportunity says the Michigan Web Access Manager portal was not working Tuesday morning. Technicians began working on a repair almost immediately.

The problem comes as the thousands of workers were laid off due to coronavirus containment measures, putting a huge strain on the system.

State figures show 129 thousand people filed for unemployment benefits in Michigan during the week of March 15th, compared to 77 thousand the week before.
