This week is National Lightning Safety Awareness Week – and officials say that preparedness is the key to safety.

The National Weather Service reports that each year – there are approximately 25-million cloud to ground lightning strikes in the U-S. – hitting about 300 people and killing an average of 20 and survivors often suffer life-long disabilities.

Tips to keep yourself safe during severe weather include:

Downloading a weather app, along with observing the 30-30 rule. When you see lightning, count to 30, and if you hear thunder before you finish go indoors. Staying out of pools or bodies of water is key and avoid running water during a storm because electricity can travel through plumbing.

Officials also say to wait for 30 minutes after thunder ends before resuming outdoor activities.
