There is no science behind the new CDC recommendations on masks, says Indiana Congressman Larry Bucshon.

As a medical doctor in Congress, Bucshon said that he doesn’t agree with the new CDC guidelines that say even people who have chosen to be vaccinated against COVID need to wear masks indoors in order to stop the spread of the Delta variant of the virus.

“I think there is no scientific evidence to say that people who are vaccinated are going to spread the disease,” said Dr. Bucshon on All Indiana Politics. “We’re trying to convince people that vaccination is the best way to come out of the pandemic medically, but then you have these recommendations coming out of the CDC.”

Bucshon said that it’s because of this lack of scientific evidence that the CDC is hurting the nation’s efforts in helping people choose to get a COVID shot. Calling the recommendation’s “anti-vaccine”, he says they are hurting people’s confidence in the shots, thus making fewer people inclined to get one.

However, Bucshon said that if you are unvaccinated, then you need to be masking up again. But, is careful to preface that assertion as a recommendation.

“Unvaccinated people, I think it is prudent for you to wear an N-95 mask or a surgical mask,” Bucshon said. “Cloth masks or bandanas don’t really help you. But, unvaccinated people should not be required to wear masks.”

In tandem with that, he is urging anyone who has not gotten a COVID shot to get it. Bucshon believes there are some politics at play in the new CDC guidelines. He says guidelines should be targeted based on the severity of spread in a particular area.
