The Food & Drug Administration has ruled that people with certain medical situations are now allowed to schedule a third COVID-19 vaccination, in the hopes of better protecting themselves.

The FDA decision only applies to people with severely weakened immune systems, such as those who have had transplants.

The general public has not yet been recommended for a third dose.

Government advisors continue to struggle with who and why should get the additional vaccine dose of Pfizer or Moderna. The FDA is still considering the possible supplemental dose for those who received the single Johnson & Johnson shot.

On Friday the CDC announced that 1.1 million people had received a third dose already, though it’s unclear how many did so because of immune deficiencies.
