Deadly apartment fire in Elkhart believed to be accidental, due to smoking

One person was found dead inside an apartment that caught fire in Elkhart.

The Elkhart Fire Department was called to the apartment complex in the 500 Block of W. Indiana Ave. early Sunday morning on the report of a fire alarm going off.

Upon arrival, Fire crews found smoke coming from the dwelling.

Inside the apartment, crews found a small fire, and the victim.

The blaze was contained to just one room.

The cause is believed to be accidental due to smoking.
