A 15-year-old was injured in a shooting in South Bend.
The shooting happened just after 10:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 7, in the area of Elwood Avenue and North Johnson Street.
Police arrived to find two people, including the victim, inside an SUV. The other occupant was not hurt.
The teenage boy was rushed to the hospital and underwent surgery. He remained in critical condition as of Friday afternoon.
There was no word about what led to the gunfire, or any suspects or arrests.
The St. Joseph County Metro Homicide Unit is leading the investigation due to the serious extent of the victim’s injuries.
Metro Homicide released the following information about the shooting:
On the evening of October 7, 2021, shortly after 10:30 p.m., the South Bend Police Department was alerted to ShotSpotter notifications in the area of Johnson and Elwood in South Bend. Upon arrival officers found a large SUV vehicle near the intersection of Johnson and Elwood. Inside the vehicle, were two occupants. One occupant, a 15-year-old boy, received a gunshot wound, and the other occupant was uninjured.
The victim was immediately transported to Memorial Hospital where he was quickly sent into surgery. As of this update, he remains in critical condition. Due to the severity of the injury to the victim, CMHU is handling the investigation. There are no suspects and no arrests have been made at this time. This remains an on-going and active investigation.
