Icy road conditions contributed to a deadly two-car crash on I-94 near New Buffalo.

The collision happened around 7:15 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 25.

Upon arrival, police found a female lying unresponsive in the roadway and found a male pinned under his vehicle.

Police were able to determine that a Ford Escape SUV was traveling eastbound near the truck weigh station when the driver lost control on the slippery roadway, ran off the road and struck a guardrail.

The vehicle then came to rest on the shoulder.

A back seat passenger was outside the vehicle tending to the front seat passenger when a second vehicle also lost control on the slick roadway and spun into the stopped first vehicle.

The second vehicle, a 2008 Buick Lucerne slammed into the passenger side of the Ford Escape while one of the occupants was standing next to the vehicle, pinning the occupant between both vehicles.

The driver of the Escape was then thrown from the vehicle and became trapped under his car.

  • The driver and front seat passenger of the Escape were transported to Memorial Hospital of South Bend for serious, but non-life threatening injuries.
  • The driver of the Buick was taken to Lakeland-Spectrum Hospital for critical injuries and was airlifted to Butterworth Hospital in Grand Rapids.
  • The front seat passenger of the Buick was taken to Franciscan Hospital in Michigan City and then transferred to University of Chicago for her injuries.
  • The back seat passenger of the Buick was treated and released at Lakeland Spectrum.
  • An autopsy will be performed on the deceased.
