A South Bend Police Officer is on administrative leave after discharging his weapon.

It was just before 11 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 29, when South Bend Police were called to the 1400 block of East Donald Street on the report of multiple shots fired.

During this response and approach, a responding officer discharged his weapon. No one was struck or injured.

The department says the incident does not align with the traditional definition of an “officer-involved shooting,” per the interlocal agreement between our department, the St. Joseph County Police Department, and the Mishawaka Police Department. So, the St. Joseph County Police Department is leading the investigation, and the city police department is fully cooperating.

South Bend Police also plans to hold its own internal investigation.

I’m glad SBPD has been sending their officers to train at the Imperial Stormtrooper Marksmanship Academy…
