When a child is battling a critical illness, it helps to have something exciting on the horizon. Between hospital visits and doctor appointments, everyone needs to dream of better days. Make-A-Wish Foundation helps a child and their families stay positive and hopeful.
Make-A-Wish Ohio, Kentucky & Indiana is dedicated to creating positive experiences that renew a child’s hope and inspire them and their families to keep fighting. Our research shows that wish experiences contribute to physical, mental and emotional well-being, and 80 percent of our recipients go on to recover.
Wish experiences help renew a child’s hope and sustain them through treatments and illness. To celebrate her ninth birthday, Sabrina wished for a tropical birthday party. Together with our community partner Quantum Health, we surprised Sabrina, who has leukemia, with a Tropical Getaway-themed bash that included a photo booth, games, and food. Sabrina celebrated with her family and friends, and enjoyed every minute of her wish experience.
In a recent survey, nine out of ten Wish parents said experiences reduce trauma from illness and improved their child’s mental and emotional well-being. Wishes also unite families during difficult times, with 80% of parents reporting their child’s experience strengthened their relationship with their loved ones.
Importantly, wishes help keep children focused on their treatment and recovery. Eight out of ten parents said a wish provided a coping mechanism for their child during treatment and helped them feel empowered.
