BBB warns of college scholarship, grant scams

College is expensive, but the Better Business Bureau says you should watch out for scams while applying for scholarships.

They receive many reports of scholarship scams every year as students look for help in paying for their college education.

Scammers typically claim to represent the government, a university, or a nonprofit organization and will claim you have won a grant or a scholarship while asking for a one-time “processing fee.”

A student pays it thinking they will receive help with paying for school, but the help never comes. The BBB tells college students to beware of the unsolicited offers.

They say students should take their time, ask lots of questions, ask about fees and reach out to your guidance counselor or college financial aid office if you have questions about the company.
