Some criminal code reforms may be coming to Benton Harbor.

The Interim City Attorney says the city is in the process of decriminalizing some minor offenses that previously would have been considered misdemeanors.

According to WSJM, the offenses would become civil infractions instead.

However, if the individual misses a court date, a warrant may be put out for them, leading to a possible criminal record.

They say discussion amongst the committee is currently focusing on minor, non-violent offenses that would be seen as civil infractions in other communities but that Benton Harbor considers misdemeanors.

Eliminate all laws, crime rate falls to zero, politicians declare success. Only the citizens suffer; anarchy reigns.
