Purdue College of Veterinary Medicine’s clinician says to be careful not to spook your pets this season

While it may be fun to celebrate the spooky season with your pets, a clinician in Purdue’s College of Veterinary Medicine says you should be careful not to scare them.

Lorraine Corriveau, a primary care clinician at the Veterinary Hospital, says that when considering whether you should put your pet in a costume, you should be sure the costume is comfortable and that it does not constrict their movement or vision.

If the pet does not seem happy, she says it may be best to let them enjoy Halloween without the apparel.

And, with many people dressed up and looking different during the holiday, you should be sure to have a reflective tag and microchip identification for your pet in case they get spooked and run off.

Be sure to keep them away from potentially toxic candy or decorations, and allow them to spend time in a closed room with treats and toys if you expect to have trick-or-treaters at your door.
