As electric vehicle use grows, some are questioning whether or not Michigan’s 5,000 gas stations may be at risk.

Bridge Michigan reports that five years ago, the Boston Consulting Group estimated that 80 percent of retain fueling would be unprofitable by 2035.

They predicted that a quarter of the world’s gas stations would close as electric vehicles became more popular.

However, many Michigan gas station operators are looking to open new stores, including plans to add 350 new Casey’s General Stores locations in the state over the next three years.

The state’s expansion comes as the national number of gas stations has declined over the last few decades, leading to lower fuel sales.
