One man has been charged after police say he beat another man with an ax handle.

LaPorte police were called to the 4900 block of N. County Road 325 West on reports of a domestic disturbance involving two men.

Upon arrival they found a 54-year-old man lying unconscious in the basement. He was taken to the hospital where he remains in critical condition.

Another man, identified as 53-year-old Phillip Jones, was taken into custody after being medically cleared.

He was charged with one count of aggravated battery and domestic battery and remains in the LaPorte County Jail.
