A man in his early 50s is in custody following a SWAT standoff Saturday afternoon in the 800 block of E. Jackson Boulevard.

The incident began around 10:45 a.m. when the Elkhart City 911 Communications Center received a report of a potentially suicidal man at a residence in the area. Officers with the Elkhart Police Department responded to conduct a welfare check.

Before officers arrived, the man reportedly fired an arrow from inside the home at another person outside. When officers attempted to contact him, he refused to come out.

Police secured a search warrant, and the Elkhart County Regional SWAT team was called to the scene. The man eventually emerged onto the roof of the house and was taken into custody without incident after climbing down a ladder around 3:20 p.m.

No injuries were reported, and authorities say there is no ongoing threat to the public.

The man was transported for medical clearance before being booked into the Elkhart County Jail on preliminary charges.
