Spring brings fish kills back to small lakes in the area

Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources says we’re getting into that time of year where we’ll see fish kills on the shores of lakes.

The DNR says it’s a normal part of the year after any normal winter.

WSJM reports that when the ice melts from smaller bodies of water like lakes and ponds, it reveals areas where sunlight was cut off from underwater vegetation. Less oxygen is produced and plants die, resulting in more bacteria and less food for the fish. It’s normal to see 100 dead fish wash up on the shore, since they were already weakened by the scant winter food supply.

You can report fish kills at the Michigan DNR website.
