Two people escaped injury after their vehicle went into the St. Joseph River at the dead end of Vistula and Beech Roads.

Police were called to the scene around 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 9, and were met by two soaked individuals who said they were the only occupants of the car.

Investigators say the black Chrysler 200 was traveling at a high rate of speed when it missed signage indicating the road was a dead end and drove into the river. Both occupants were able to get out of the vehicle on their own and call for help.

The St. Joseph County Police Dive Team entered the water to secure the vehicle for towing.

The driver was taken into custody on suspicion of DUI, minor consuming alcohol, and operating without a license. The passenger was cited for minor consuming alcohol and released.
