The Michigan Municipal League is asking the state government to establish an $800 million fund over the next five years to help support affordable housing in the state.

That money could result in 10,000 new or rehabilitated homes in communities that relax certain zoning regulations.

It’s uncertain if the legislature would accept the proposal, or opt for a different funding push for the coming year instead, amid an already difficult budget cycle.

The group requesting the funding represents local governments across the state, and has some bipartisan support in the State House. State officials say Michigan is roughly 119,000 housing units short as of numbers from the spring.

The governor and legislature have an October 1 deadline to finalize a state budget and avoid a shutdown.
