Cold air has settled into the region, and Indiana Michigan Power is urging customers to take advantage of energy-saving tools and assistance programs as heating systems work harder through the winter months.
Stephanny Smith, I&M’s director of Communications and Engagement, said colder temperatures often mean higher bills.
The utility recommends several ways to reduce monthly usage, including avoiding space heaters, which can add more than $60 a month to a bill.
Lowering the thermostat 7–10 degrees for eight hours a day can save up to 10 percent on yearly heating costs.
I&M also advises against closing heat registers, and encourages residents to use sunlight to naturally warm their homes during the day.
Customers with smart meters can track their usage through I&M’s Weekly Energy Update and set high-bill alerts through their online accounts.
For those needing financial help, I&M partners with local and federal programs, including 211, and offers payment extensions, payment arrangements and the Friends & Family Direct support option.
