Clay firefighters responded to an unusual emergency call Friday involving a horse in distress due to cold exposure.

Crews were dispatched for an ice rescue and found the horse unable to stand and showing signs of hypothermia. Firefighters quickly took action, constructing a temporary tent to serve as a windbreak while working to warm the animal.

With assistance from the horse’s owner — and a little encouragement — the horse, named Jericho, was eventually able to stand and walk back to his stall inside the barn.

Officials say Jericho was not injured and is now resting comfortably, warm and safe, with a fresh blanket and plenty of treats.
