State Senator Linda Rogers (R-Granger) has withdrawn Senate Bill 248 from consideration, shelving a proposal that would have overhauled the selection process for the South Bend Community School Corporation’s board.
SB 248 would have created a nominating commission made up of local stakeholders who would put forward a list of candidates for the Indiana Secretary of Education to choose from, replacing the current system for appointing members to the district’s governing body.
The bill drew significant testimony during a Jan. 14 hearing before the Senate Committee on Education and Career Development, including feedback from education advocates, parents and community leaders.
“Over the last year, I worked with many local stakeholders… who all agreed that something needed to be done to help turn the tide and improve outcomes in our South Bend schools,” Rogers said in a statement. “After hearing the testimony this week, I agree that this is not the right solution at this time.”
Rogers said she hopes the debate surrounding the legislation will prompt broader conversations about persistent challenges within the district. She also expressed support for ongoing efforts by current school leadership and indicated she plans to continue working with local officials on possible reforms.
One idea raised during discussions, Rogers noted, is the creation of an advisory board made up of parents, educators and community leaders to provide input to the school board.
“I am dedicated to ensuring the success of our Hoosier children,” Rogers said. “I want them to receive the best possible education so they can be successful in all their future endeavors.”
Rogers thanked Sens. Ryan Mishler and David Niezgodski for their collaboration and said she intends to remain engaged in discussions about improving academic outcomes in South Bend schools.
