Two Mishawaka police officers are being credited with saving a man from a burning apartment.

According to the Mishawaka Police Department, officers were dispatched just after 7:30 a.m. on Sunday, April 19, to assist the fire department at an apartment in the 700 block of Liberty Drive after a resident called 911 to report a fire.

Officers Richard Freeman and Rachel Corona arrived within minutes, before firefighters reached the scene. Upon arrival, they confirmed an active fire inside the apartment.

Police say the officers entered the residence and found a 68-year-old man sitting on a couch in the living room as flames burned on the floor and along an interior wall. The man was unable to escape on his own due to a recent hospitalization, and his clothing had already been burned.

Freeman and Corona carried the man out of the apartment to safety. After getting him outside, Freeman re-entered the unit and used a nearby jug of water to put out flames burning in the carpeting.

Firefighters arrived shortly after and extinguished the remaining fire. They also provided medical treatment to the victim.

No word yet on the extent of the man’s injuries or what caused the fire.
