Apology issued by University of Notre Dame following report detailing priest sexual abuse

(Spencer Marsh/95.3 MNC)

The University of Notre Dame says an independent investigation found evidence of sexual abuse involving two former Holy Cross priests connected to the university.

The report concluded that Father Thomas King, a former Zahm Hall rector, engaged in sexual abuse and displayed what investigators described as a predatory pattern of behavior.

The investigation also found instances of abuse involving Father David Porterfield. University President Father Robert Dowd and the Board Chair issued an apology to victims and called the findings deeply disturbing.

Notre Dame says it’s implementing several reforms, including new oversight procedures, expanded reporting requirements, and enhanced cooperation with the Congregation of Holy Cross when allegations arise.

The report details that Notre Dame knew about Father King in the 1990s, but they did not act.
