The Better Business Bureau is warning job seekers about a growing employment scam involving so-called “task-based” jobs.

Scammers promise easy money for liking videos, subscribing to channels or completing simple online tasks, but victims often end up losing thousands of dollars.

The BBB says employment scam reports doubled in 2025, with more than 23,000 complaints filed across North America. Investigators say many scams begin through unsolicited text messages and offer jobs without interviews.

Red flags include upfront fees, pressure to act quickly and requests for money to unlock earnings.

The BBB advises job hunters to research companies carefully and avoid jobs promising unrealistic pay for simple online activity.
