Vice President Mike Pence could break tie on Betsy DeVos confirmation

The former Indiana Governor and sitting Vice President could very well cast an historic vote on Tuesday.

A sitting Vice President has never cast the deciding vote for a cabinet nominee. However, there is growing belief in Washington that Mike Pence will be called on to do just that to approve Betsy DeVos as the Secretary of Education, according to The Guardian and other outlets.

One of the few actual duties of the Vice President is to break ties in the Senate, a role that has been used very seldom in recent years. Joe Biden never used it during his eight years in office.

And with this vote coming just 18 days into the Trump presidency, it will be the earliest tie-breaking vote cast by a Vice President since Congress and the Presidency were established in 1789.
