It’s getting colder and the South Bend Police Department is cautioning against doing something a lot of people like to do in the winter.

A lot of drivers will warm up their cars and leave them running while they return indoors for warmth and to finish preparing to leave. But South Bend Police say this leads to an increase in motor vehicle thefts.

Last winter, 30 cars were reported stolen from November to the end of March because they were left unattended while idling.

Police say one possible solution is a remote starting system that allows you to start the engine, but leaves the doors, steering, and transmission locked.
