A police pursuit started on the west side of South Bend and ended with the vehicle wrecked near the South Bend International Airport and two from Nappanee arrested.

It happened around 10 a.m. Thursday when an Indiana State Police trooper caught a silver Buick LaCrosse speeding on State Road 2 near the U.S. 20/31 bypass. When the officer put on his lights, the Buick reportedly slipped between two semis and went southbound on the bypass.

The Buick drove on a construction lane to Mayflower Road, where it got off and where the trooper stopped pursuing it due to the Buick’s erratic steering. The Buick was found crashed near the airport and the trooper used his K-9 Nala to try and find the two men.

They were found at the airport trying to get into a cab. It turns out that 21-year-old Tyler Vatter and 28-year-old Matthew Powell, both of Nappanee, were in a stolen vehicle.

Both are charged with resisting law enforcement, with Vatter also facing charges including theft, leaving the scene of a crash and reckless driving.
