Prior planning helps Mishawaka avoids major flooding issues

The City of Mishawaka didn’t take any major flood damage during the recent situation. Mayor Dave Wood said there were reasons for that.

Mayor Wood said the Princess City took steps to avoid the problems that many other cities encountered, precautions that involved spending more than $100 million to build the necessary infrastructure since 1990. He told ABC 57 News that structures not built in areas prone to flooding in Mishawaka are still designed to handle flood waters.

He says the city has also invested $66 million in the Wastewater Treatment Plant to ensure no wastewater would get into the river during a flood.
