The city of South Bend is reportedly considering five locations for a new South Shore Line station.
The city is considering its options or a planned South Shore Line re-routing that would cut the time it takes to go from South Bend to Chicago from 160 minutes to 90 minutes by 2020. That project includes double-tracking the existing line from Chicago to Michigan City.
Here are the five options the city is considering, according to the South Bend Tribune:
• Putting a station on the west side of the airport (aka the Ardmore route)
• A new station across from Honeywell on underutilized parking lots along Bendix Drive
• Renovating the Amtrak station at West Washington/Meade. The South Shore used the site from 1970-1992 and still owns it.
• A new station at the planned South Bend Chocolate Co. production facility/dinosaur museum west of the U.S. 31 bypass.
• A new downtown station.
South Bend hired AECOM at a cost of $125,000 to study the options for the South Shore Line station. Mayor Pete Buttigieg says he wants to set up a public meeting by early May to review AECOM’s study, with route selection in the summer.
