2020 census a mixed bag for Michigan

(95.3 MNC)

The 2020 Census numbers came in late last week, and they show much of Michigan having lost population, but inching up slightly overall.

Most of the counties in the western and southern parts of the Lower Peninsula gained population while much of the rest of the state experienced losses.

The state’s population was up 2% since 2010 with a total of just over 10 million people.

The size of the state’s white majority has become 4% smaller as Michigan has become more racially diverse. It’s Hispanic and Asian populations had gains, while the number of those who identify as black held steady.

For the 7th straight decade, Detroit’s population went down, one of the few major cities in the US to lose people in the last ten years.
