Fire crews responded to a building fire in the 900 block of South 2nd Street, where smoke and flames were visible upon arrival.

The Elkhart Fire Department was dispatched to the scene around 6:50 p.m. on Wednesday, July 9.

First arriving crews found heavy smoke coming from the back portion of the two-story wood-frame home, near the roofline of the first floor. Firefighters quickly began an interior attack and located the fire’s origin near a bathroom area.

No one was home at the time, but firefighters were informed that a dog and a cat were still inside. The dog was safely removed by EFD personnel, and the cat was found unharmed once the fire was extinguished.

The fire was brought under control about half-an-hour later. No injuries were reported.

The fire caused an estimated $90,000 in structure and property damage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
